Elizabeth F. Hounsell: Glycoanalysis Protocols

Glycoanalysis Protocols

Description

Protein glycosylation is now acknowledged as a major posttranslational modification with significant effects on protein folding, conformation distri- bution, stability, and activity. The added oligosaccharide chains are large and diverse and have specific recognition motifs important in many aspects of cell interactions and regulation. As such, there is a growing need to communicate the analytical methods of the specialist carbohydrate chemist, biochemist, and physicochemist to protein experts and the pharmaceutical industry. Other areas that come under the influence of the glycosciences are DNA interactions with ubiquitous saccharide-containing antibiotics and antitumor drugs; inhibitors of viral infection; bacterial, mycobacterial, and parasite antigens; glycolipids; glycophosphatidylinositol protein membrane anchors; and (glyco)protein- proteoglycan interactions. Compared to the first edition of this book, Glycopro- tein Analysis in Biomedicine, less emphasis is given to biomedical aspects, but these chapters are still pertinent today. The significant differences in the con- tent relate to advances in analysis relevant to biotechnology; for example, the production of recombinant glycoproteins and other therapeutics. It must also not be forgotten that the methods here described in Glycoanalysis Protocols are relevant to exploiting the commercial potential of carbohydrates in fields related to agriculture, food, and the domestic and chemical industries. The emphasis of the book remains in bringing the glycosciences into mainstream biochemistry. The analytical methods covered in Glycoanalysis Protocols are the re- sult of experts translating their life's works into easy-to-follow recipes.

Peter Bently: King Jack and the Dragon

King Jack and the Dragon

Description

Illustrated by picture book star Helen Oxenbury, this magical make-believe adventure is the perfect bedtime tale for little boys and brave children everywhere.Night is falling, bedtime is looming and playtime is nearly over ...but brave King Jack is more than a match for fearsome dragons and terrible beasties. Peter Bently and Helen Oxenbury weave a tale of such powerful magic that King Jack and the Dragon looks set to become a classic every bit as powerful as We're Going on a Bear Hunt. This wonderful new tale is now reissued in hardy board book format, to be enjoyed again and again by the hardiest little warriors.

At its core, "The Power of Habit" contains an exhilarating argument: King Jack and the Dragon free download pdf The key to exercising regularly, losing weight, raising exceptional children, becoming more productive, building revolutionary companies and social movements, and achieving success is understanding how habits work. Habits aren't destiny. As Charles Duhigg shows, by harnessing this new science, we can transform our businesses, our communities, and our lives. This is an unrivalled account of one man's service in the elite Waffen-SS Liebstandarte division, principally on the Eastern Front. The author, an 18-year old Belgian, was blackmailed into volunteering for the Waffen-SS in 1941 to save his mother from a concentration camp. After enduring the MG harsh training with the Leibstandarte SS Adolf Hitler (considered by some to be a worse experience than the fighting front), Maeger went on to be selected as a frontline driver in Russia. He saw combat at Kharkov and at the legendary battle of Kursk. In 1944 he was transferred out for training as an SS paramedic, but after two months was sent against his will for SS-officer training. Overheard making a defeatist remark, he was sent to the notorious SS penal division Dirlewanger on the Oder front, where he survived the horror of the Halbe pocket. On 1 May 1945 he was captured by the Russians near the Elbe. He served at the prison camp infirmary as a volunteer which won him the admiration of the Russian female doctor and with her help he gained his early release the same year.

Broken Homes

Description

My name is Peter Grant, and I am a keeper of the secret flame -- whatever that is. Truth be told, there's a lot I still don't know. My superior Nightingale, previously the last of England's wizardly governmental force, is trying to teach me proper schooling for a magician's apprentice. But even he doesn't have all the answers. Mostly I'm just a constable sworn to enforce the Queen s Peace, with the occasional help from some unusual friends and a well-placed fire blast. With the new year, I have three main objectives, a) pass the detective exam so I can officially become a DC, b) work out what the hell my relationship with Lesley Mai, an old friend from the force and now fellow apprentice, is supposed to be, and most importantly, c) get through the year without destroying a major landmark. Two out of three isn t bad, right? A mutilated body in Crawley means another murderer is on the loose. The prime suspect is one Robert Weil, who may either be a common serial killer or an associate of the twisted magician known as the Faceless Man -- a man whose previous encounters I've barely survived. I've also got a case about a town planner going under a tube train and another about a stolen grimoire. But then I get word of something very odd happening in Elephant and Castle, on a housing estate designed by a nutter, built by charlatans, and inhabited by the truly desperate. If there's a connection to the Crawley case, I'll be entering some tricky waters of juristiction with the local river spirits. We have a prickly history, to say the least. Just the typical day for a magician constable."

A dynamic insight into how science will shape human destiny over the coming century. What will the world look like in 2020, 2030 or even 2100? How will progress in scientific research affect human life in the areas of health and lifestyle, energy and the environment, politics and conflict, space exploration and even the ultimate questions of existence? This book offers an electrifying trip through the wonders - and terrors - awaiting us over the next hundred years. The ideas explored include: Therapeutic cloning; Regenerative medicine; Nanotechnology; Quantum computers; Cyberwarfare; Space colonies; The nature of consciousness; Broken Homes download PDF Digital democracy. editions for London, New York, Tokyo, "Compares favorably to the best of Scott Turow" --"Publishers Weekly "(starred)"A striking new talent." --"Entertainment Weekly""

Anna Whitelock: Mary Tudor: England's First Queen

Mary Tudor: England's First Queen

Description

In the summer of 1553, against all odds, Mary Tudor was the first woman to be crowned Queen of England. Anna Whitelock's absorbing debut tells the remarkable story of a woman who was a princess one moment, and a disinherited bastard the next. It tells of her Spanish heritage and the unbreakable bond between Mary and her mother, Katherine of Aragon; of her childhood, adolescence, rivalry with her sister Elizabeth and finally her womanhood. Throughout her life Mary was a fighter, battling to preserve her integrity and her right to hear the Catholic mass. Finally, she fought for the throne. The Mary that emerges from this groundbreaking biography is not the weak-willed failure of traditional narratives, but a complex figure of immense courage, determination and humanity.

The present corporate food regime dominating the planet's food systems is environmentally destructive, financially volatile and socially unjust. Though the regime's contributions to the planet's four-fold food-fuel-finance and climate crises are well documented, the "solutions" advanced by our national and global institutions reinforce the same destructive technological path, the same global market fundamentalism, and the same unregulated consolidation of corporate power in the food system that brought us the crisis in the first place.

Sir Robert Anderson: The Coming Prince

The Coming Prince

Description

One of the most exhaustive works ever written on Daniel's Seventieth Week and the coming Antichrist, featuring a complete chronology.

This is a sweet, funny Step into Reading book that kids will gobble up (without realizing they are ingesting an important natural-history lesson!)." With the publication of her first novel, THE HEART IS A LONELY HUNTER, Carson McCullers, all of twenty-three, became a literary sensation. With its profound sense of moral isolation and its compassionate glimpses into its characters' inner lives, the novel is considered McCullers' finest work, an enduring masterpiece first published by Houghton Mifflin in 1940. At its center is the deaf-mute John Singer, who becomes the confidant for various types of misfits in a Georgia mill town during the 1930s. Each one yearns for escape from small town life. When Singer's mute companion goes insane, Singer moves into the Kelly house, where Mick Kelly, the book's heroine (and loosely based on McCullers), finds solace in her music. Wonderfully attuned to the spiritual isolation that underlies the human condition, and with a deft sense for racial tensions in the South, McCullers spins a haunting, unforgettable story that gives voice to the rejected, the forgotten, and the mistreated -- and, through Mick Kelly, gives voice to the quiet, intensely personal search for beauty. Richard Wright praised Carson McCullers for her ability "to rise above the pressures of her environment and embrace white and black humanity in one sweep of apprehension and tenderness." She writes "with a sweep and certainty that are overwhelming," said the NEW YORK TIMES. McCullers The Coming Prince download ebook pdf became an overnight literary sensation, but her novel has endured, just as timely and powerful today as when it was first published. THE HEART IS A LONELY HUNTER is Carson McCullers at her most compassionate, endearing best.
